Dear Readers,
After a loosely-held personal milestone of hitting 100 views per post, I decided to quit prevaricating and head into the Danger Zone to change this newsletter’s subdomain, thereby breaking all old links.
I’m sure Substack uses “danger zone” and “break” to scare people into holding on to what may no longer fit their current reality. That’s why I’ve always loosely held my various online identities and blog spaces that I’ve accumulated since 2005, assured in the truism that change is the only constant. Also, I’m a borderline geriatric Millennial who grew up writing in paper journals, hence all my posts are cross-saved to Notion and other databases.
On a more practical note, I only ever cross-post to Twitter, and I’ve already given up on the Thought-Catalog-2.0 listicle dumpster fire that is Medium. Updating access to this newsletter would be as simple as, yes, copypasting the new URL.
Why contrapuntal? Or counterpoint? It’s a very poorly kept secret that I used to practice Early Music, broadly agreed to precede the Classical era, typified by polyphony and counterpoint. Counterpoint is defined as two or more different tunes sounded together. They balance and blend. It is not cacophony, nor is it exactly Taoist yin-yang balance. It is something quite beautiful, two or more different things existing and sounding out at the same time. Cacophony seems to rule the marketplace of ideas. Could we introduce some counterpoint? I hope The Contrapuntal makes a contribution in that direction, and thank you for continuing to join me on this journey.
I appreciate your readership very much.
Yours in counterpoint,
Jules
Love your work Jules, as ever. Excited for the new chapter.
