Taking on 33 with a high kick (but never again in skinny jeans)
It’s taken me until my ‘Jesus year’ to understand the truly important things in life, but unlike Jesus, I should have a good few more years to give it a go.
Readjusting to life back in Singapore has been challenging to say the least, and I’ve been running away from it consciously and subconsciously with extensive overseas travel, but yesterday marked a turning point as I realised how much love, laughter and fellowship surround me like a warm hug.
For the first time in a long time it felt more ‘normal’ and good to be back home, to understand the above-mentioned truly important things in life: family, belonging, identity and love.
The past 18 months have also highlighted the particular mental health challenges that expatriates face, for all their perceived privilege. Very few care enough to warn you about the inevitable loneliness, isolation and depression you face with a relocation, even if you’re the most sociable creature on earth. The displacement, the culture shocks, the racism (in whatever forms they manifest).
I am inspired to speak out more to help others of my generation in a similar situation, and to waste no more time in properly building a legacy.
This 33rd rotation round the sun also featured an impromptu photoshoot with my little brother Isaac and proper pupper Kira. He’s a talented photographer who specialises in portraits, both studio and outdoors, and is also available for bookings! Credits and enquiries go to: @criyatives on a Sony A7iii, 50mm, diffused one point lighting. Studio, The A11ey.
Kira the Japanese spitz is available as a ‘pawdel’, just sayin’
