I don't want a career. What I want is to make a living that allows for a good life (as I define it, of course). Even in China they're cracking down on toxic 996 culture.
Remember how Allen Wu was holding the company seal ransom? Well, here's Part II of the saga.
The CCP's next target is niang pao (literally, "woman cannon", but they mean "sissy boys"), typically seen in the Boys' Love (BL) genre, the Chinese yaoai. I see the CCP's recent wave of actions as a "correct society" attempt, driven by paranoia that their citizens will soon turn against them if inequalities aren't addressed. Also, these fandoms are toxic, and the flow of money is too free… h/t @bookgir for this insight
There is an interesting tangent to the above, that of hanfu revival and all its problematic fringes and mini-communities. Period dramas play a huge role in BL, as does dressing, both historical and fanciful.
"So even though the more progressive Chinese literatis (men and women) of that time called for a liberation of their ‘natural breasts’ but it was not until 1927 that it was officially launched by the government." – Utterly fascinating, and something I had not known before. Please give Gong Pan Pan's blog Hanfu Girl a follow if the intersection of history, culture and fashion interests you.
